- Boyd Elementary Receives Evers Portrait
Anthony DiFatta and the Fondren Renaissance Foundation donated a portrait of civil rights hero Medgar Wiley Evers to Boyd Elementary School on Thursday, October 12, 2006. The portrait—the first they hope of many to come—hangs in the foyer of the school, which received a beautiful renovation which included additional of classrooms and a larger cafeteria this past spring.
The school held a mock election to help emphasize the importance of voting and to teach a new generation of youth about the work and sacrifice of Medgar Evers. The reception was attended by Charles Evers, former Mississippi Gov. William Winter, Rev. Ed King, Tony DiFatta, and Doctor Helen Barnes.

- Residents Push for Noise Ordinance
The City Council recently held a public forum to hear from residents and landlords around the revisions of the Housing Ordinances in the city. Among the revisions, the council passed a noise ordinance 6 - 1 (highly supported by the Broadmeadow and Fondren residents) with Mr. Kenny Stokes being the only dissenting vote because of the $250 fine. The Mayor pledged to vigorously enforce this ordinance by going as far as arresting flagrant violators and holding them in custody until the fine is paid. There was a good spirit surrounding the whole issue and great sentiment that all of the ordinances need to be enforced. This shows that when citizens speak up and voice their concerns, City Council listens and issues get resolved. The results speak volumes because it shows that we/citizens/police/City Hall mean business, even on the little things. (From an email received on 10/10/06)

The Books and Basketball program at Broadmeadow UMC recently took a group of Murrah High School Seniors to New Orleans to visit hurricane ravaged areas of the city. The boys and their mentors - Liz and Bill Brister - helped to gut a house that had flooded with more than 8 feet of water. The Books and Basketball program meets Mondays at Broadmeadow during the school year to help develop our youth into well educated and active community citizens increasing their life choices and chances for success. The program includes tutoring in academic subjects, ACT prep and College planning, mentoring, volunteerism, and exposure to people and places outside of Jackson.
